Software products in Medtronic's neuromodulation group include Android platform apps for implanted medical devices. There are four product families that relieve symptoms associated with ailments relating to the brain, pain conditions, pelvic health, and spinal injuries. Most software products allow patients and clinicians to program, optimize, and control electrical stimulation in their body. With many variations between legacy systems and exciting new technologies, a diverse population of users, and many variations between therapies, the complexity of the projects creates many interesting and unusual UX challenges.

Key UX Challenges:

  • Diverse patient populations with cognitive impairment and movement disorders.
  • A diverse population of health care professionals spanning from KOIs to new residents and nurse practitioners.
  • Integration of new features in a highly complex environment where software supports new and legacy systems.
  • Prioritizing ease of use within constraints, such as translations into 30+ languages.
  • Balancing UI efficiency and customer experience with a focus on safety and accessability.
  • Making complex interactions clear and simple to use.
  • Integrating research in an environment with challenging constraints (such as travel required for most data collection, recruiting hurdles, and difficult to obtain competitor products).
